Fall 2014 was when everything changed for dance choreographer and talent acquisition manager Monica Ahuja. From a young age she was a go-getter. She started her fashion career when she was just in high school by creating the fashion club and the cultural dance club. However, in fall of 2014 she received an acceptance letter for Robert E. Smith Business School at University of Maryland. She changed my major at least 4 times before she decided on a Business Degree. Monica comments, “I was thrilled to see the acceptance letter in my hand and I remember the promise I made to myself that I will do my best” From that point on she never looked back, always seeing the world full of opportunities and ready to take them on.
Since then, Monica has focused all her energy into embracing those opportunities and challenging herself. In 2016, she entered the Miss India DC and placed top 5, and after that she grew to become more involved in not only the fashion industry, but also becoming active in female empowerment. For Monica, it’s not only about building her career, it’s about building her career, while she contributes to her community. This is why she is an active member of “DMVGIRLGANG” which a group of women that discuss a variety of real issues and topics in hopes of uplifting and empowering women. DMVGIRLGANG has grown to have a powerful influence in the DMV area, standing as a voice for women all over.
Her social activism does not stop there. Since Monica is keen on using her abilities to make a change, she began to use dance as a way to portray these social issues, for example, she created a video showcasing a girl’s reaction of not being able to get married due to high dowry, since since the dowry system is something she advocates against.
As a woman who is involved in both the fashion and business world, you might ask what Monica is planning to do next. Well, for Monica it’s all about keeping a positive outlook. She states, “I was one of those people who would always think of the worst in a situation before even thinking about the opportunity in a situation. This past year was full of amazing opportunities yet somehow or someway I would have some kind of feeling that what if all goes wrong. In that process, I would never enjoy the success to it’s fullest.”
Well, we couldn’t agree more that a positive attitude changes everything, but we are going to let you in on a little secret, Monica has a few other things she plans to achieve. She’s looking to eventually start her own clothing line or business in the fashion industry aka make one of her biggest dreams come true and be a proud owner of a successful brand.
A round of applause to that! You go girl, and we can’t wait to watch all of your dreams come true!
